May's Fishing Report -

Saturday, May 3

Mike Pickert was aboard for his bottom fishing charter today along with Steve and Jack. Fog was the word of the day today, thick from start to finish, with the exception of about a 15 minute lull where we had 1/2 mile visibility mid-day. It wasn't cold, the air temp. was in the 50's, and the wind was relatively light most of the day, out of the Northeast at 10 knots mostly, although it did blow up to 15 knots or so from the inlet back to the dock. Seas were swells of around 4', with a strong current running down the beach. The ocean surface temp. on the fishing grounds was 52° F.

We fished inshore (70'-80') today, we fished offshore (100'-120') today. Best news was we caught everywhere we went. We didn't find great numbers anywhere, but steady biting with a mixed bag of jumbo sea bass (to near 4 pounds), ling and pout. At day's end, we kept nearly 20 fish per person, all good sized fish. Sea bass accounted for about 2/3 of the catch, with about half as many ling. I was hoping we might land a couple cod, but we didn't put any in the boat, although Jack lost a decent fish that certainly could've been one. There were no shortage of fillets at the cleaning table, that's for sure. We caught the spiny dogfish as well, but they weren't as much of a nuisance as I feared they might. Each year we're getting more of a handle on how to deal with them, or at least that's what I'd like to think. Anyway, it was a good trip today, as always, thanks for fishing aboard the Karen Ann II.

Friday, May 2

Took a quick trip out into the bay this evening with my 4-year old Jacob for some bluefishing. Skies were partly cloudy with an air temp. in the upper 50's, comfortably cool. The wind was blowing out of the east at around 10-12 knots with a small chop on the bay. The bay surface temp. is around 60° F.

After some intel from the nite before, it didn't take us long to find the bluefish tonite, with the birds showing the way. We were able to catch casting bucktails and small metal lures, but with the birds scattered, we caught better trolling. By the time we quit ("Daddy, I'm exhausted!"), the birds had made up for a 1/2 mile solid in the bay, you probably could've walked across the fish busting water. It was a good sight and a good time with my son. Looking forward to more of it this year.
