October, 2009 Fishing Report -

Friday, October 15th

Mother Nature has not been kind this fall, with only a limited number of days to get out on the ocean. The days we've fished we've managed fair boxes of fish with a mix of scup, triggerfish, bluefish, croakers and small weakfish. We're in the midst of successive Nor'easters moving up the coast through the weekend, with seas running in excess of 10' on the ocean.

A cool 42° F. morning for the Hamilton Post Office charter this morning. The clear skies provided for plenty of sunshine on the day, allowing the air temp. to rise into the mid-upper 60's. Winds were out of the NW at 5-10 knots to start the day, and backed to the West and held around 10 knots for the afternoon. Seas were chops of around 1', just a gorgeous day to be on the ocean. The ocean surface temp. was 65° F.

Restcricted in our ability to target the black sea bass beyond 3 miles from shore, we spent the day targeting scup and tog. Catching was very good (including sea bass that we were not allowed to retain). We finished the day with a box of 40 fish, the majority of which was scup. We had no problems bringing home the group's limit of 1 tog per person (Gi appears in photo at left with the day's best), and also added some triggerfish and small bluefish to the box. A beautiful day with good fishing, thanks for choosing the Karen Ann II.

Sunday, October 4th

I hosted the Groff family and friends today for the last day to legally target black sea bass beyond 3 miles from shore. 61° F. to start the morning with thick fog; leaving the dock in the dark made it nearly impossible to find the markers leaving the marina the fog was so thick. Winds were light out of the West, along the fog to hold around the inlet all day, we had it again coming home (but not on the offshore fishing grounds). Mostly sunny skies paved the way for an air temp. in the mid-upper 70's. Seas were a swell of about 2' with a surface temp. of 67° F.

If we were going to go out, it was a good way to go out today with a box of near 100 fish, mostly keeper sea bass along with some more nice triggerfish. It was non-stop catching with throwbacks outnumbering keepers by a 3-4 to 1 margin. Good catching, good weather, good group, sometimes it's very good to be a captain. Thanks.
