The Bigeye tuna is often difficult to distinguish from other tunas at a young age, but larger specimens are distinguished by a much larger than normal eye.

Bigeyes seem to like disturbances caused in the water, especially right near the transoms of fishing boats. For this reason, lures are generally fished right in the wash when trolling for Bigeye. They can also be taken when chunking.
